Water resistant labels

Companies spend a lot of time, effort and money on designing eye catching labels that meet all compliance standards for their products, so obviously a label peeling off is something you will want to avoid. This is because a label peeling off reduces the marketability of the product, as it looks unprofessional and can leave customers without vital instructions on proper use of the product. Water resistant labels are crucial for any product that comes into contact with water. Using the correct label material and adhesive on your product can help you avoid these situations of labels peeling off or falling off completely, retaining your products marketability and inspiring customer confidence in your brand.  For more details contact Etiquette on 0845 222 0354 or you can email the Sales Team at:

Synthetic Labels

Synthetic labels are made with highly durable yet flexible materials that come with a variety of finishes such as gloss, matt and transparent. Synthetic labels provide a professional, high quality finish for any products that may require a decorative or practical solution. These labels can be used with a permanent adhesive for long lasting quality in addition to being used with removable adhesives which can make them ideal for high quality temporary labels. They are also waterproof which makes them perfect for shampoo bottles or car engine parts as synthetic labels can withstand the harshest environments.

Questions about your labels

What are the products you are going to label? This is the most important question because this allows us to understand more about the needs of the product. We work with multiple adhesives and substrates, allowing us to tailor solutions to the exact needs of your product. Different product applications can require a multitude of different materials, and Etiquette provides the expert advice needed to ensure we get it right first time.

Do you have artwork? Seeing the artwork makes it easier for us to give you a quotation and lead time on your labels. We will be able to understand more about what your labels will require in order to look their absolute best.

Do you have multiple products or variants? If you’re looking to label a range of products, such as limited edition items or different flavours, we can provide variations on the same label. We can give each label a unique look, whilst preserving a theme that lets customers know these products are all part of the same line.

How many labels do you need? This helps us determine what printing method to employ to provide you with the most cost effective solution and quality needed for your products. Smaller volumes may need to be printed digitally to allow savings on set-up costs where as larger volumes can provide cost savings when produced on our flexographic presses.

What’s the time frame? We’re proud of all aspects of the service we provide here at Etiquette, but we are most proud of our turnaround time.  You won’t find anyone faster in the labelling industry, and that’s a good thing, because many of our clients need their labels yesterday. We understand this, which is why Etiquette Labels provide the solutions you need to get your labels to you, on time and in full.

Purposes of self-adhesive labels

Self-adhesive labels have a multitude of purposes and span a wide variety of industries. Some labels are functional like warning signs labels or tactile labels. Other labels serve a more decorative purpose like product branding. Many labels intended purposes may be to do both jobs like in food labelling; the label may be designed to catch your eye and inform the consumer about ingredients contained in the product. Other labels are for security reasons like tamper evident labels. These labels have seals which can carry a void message should they be peeled away which is great for security purposes, or the alternative to this is a destructible vinyl material which breaks at a touch. Consider the message you want to send out to your potential consumers, as labels are a unique selling point of any product.

Digital Printing Solutions from Etiquette

Etiquette labels offer a wide variety of services including digitally printed labels. Digital printing is the ideal solution for a customer who is looking for lower quantities of printed labels and would like to benefit from the minimum set up costs provided by this technology. Barcodes can be incorporated within the design which allows for product traceability. Digital printing allows you to take advantage of the ever changing market place and maximise the marketing opportunities presented by seasonal or limited edition labels. Digital printing can be a very cost effective when used in this way for low quantities of multiple labels due to the plate-less technology digital printing offers.

Allergen Awareness

If you want to ensure that your customers do not suffer an allergic reaction whilst using or consuming your products you will need to raise awareness of the ingredients or even chemicals used in the making of your product. Product labels need to make customers aware of potential allergen risks from the outset. Before the consumer purchases the product in question, the label should be informative about any potential allergy risks. This may be difficult simply because there are so many allergens found in household products. A business can’t control how people will use their products after purchase, but an informative label can help prevent any allergic reactions, if this is clearly stated on the label. If companies produce a product that may trigger an allergic reaction, it could be in their best interest to make it apparent to customers as to avoid any negative experiences for the end consumer.

Etiquette Labels Q&A

Chris Davies is Etiquette Labels Marketing Manager and has been with the company for over 5 years. After leaving the media industry and the bright lights of London behind, Chris returned to North Wales  to take up his role at Etiquette. Chris has been very influential in the direction the business has taken and helped Etiquette achieve year on year growth. He recently became a father for the first time, and today we managed to catch up with him, to discuss a few points about the labelling industry.

What attracted you to the labelling industry?

Variation. At Etiquette we work with many customers across a broad range of industries so every day there is something different. It may be an exciting new label design for a customer who is rebranding, or a difficult and interesting application that requires our team to think outside the box and come up with a solution – everyday there is something happening and to be a part of that and a part of this industry is great.

Why did you choose to work for Etiquette?

The people. From the instant I first stepped through the doors at Etiquette it was obvious that there was a fantastic working atmosphere. As cliched as it always sounds we are really like a big family and I can honestly say there’s never been a day where I’ve thought “I don’t want to go to work today”.

What separates Etiquette from other label manufacturers?

As I’ve said I think the people we have here are what makes us one of the best in the business. We have experts in every single area of labelling and can call upon a vast amount of experience to deliver the right advice to customers. The care and attention that everyone puts into their roles here is second to none and means that we can produce quality work that is rarely matched.

What is the most pleasing aspect of your role in Etiquette?

Seeing my work get results that help the business to grow and that enables my colleagues and their families to benefit from the subsequent rewards that come with it. Also, I love speaking to happy and satisfied customers.

What is the most inspiring label design you have seen?

Whilst we have some amazing, intricate and cool label designs going through the presses on a daily basis, I wouldnt say that artwork is the most inspiring part of a label. The most inspiring aspect of a label for me is seeing it grace a product that a customer has seen through from an idea to a reality. People put their blood, sweat, tears, hearts and soul into developing their businesses and it is a road that is never easy. Being able to produce a label that adds the finishing touch to a product at the final stage of its journey is a wonderfully inspiring feeling. The look on a customers face as they finally see the result of all their hard work is something that always stays with me and makes me proud of what we do at Etiquette.

How has the printing industry changed since you have started working in the industry?

The emergence of new print technologies such as Digital has really taken hold of the industry and made it lot more competitive in recent years. Customers now have a multitude of options when it comes to how they want their product labels manufactured so its important that we continue to adapt to these changes and deliver the excellent service Etiquette has always been known for.

What are your ambitions for the future regarding the business?

To continue to experience sustainable growth year on year by producing premium quality products that help improve the businesses of our customers. As always we will invest in the right technologies that allow us to do this to the best of our ability. As well as happy customers, I also want happy staff so will continue to do all I can to maintain and grow the Etiquette family.

Synthetic Materials

There is an enormous amount of different synthetic label material available. There are three main variants Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP) and Polyester (PET).

Polyethylene is available in White, Transparent or Silver. Polyethylene is very diverse and its characteristics can meet the demanding requirements of household or personal care products that need to be squeezable and robust enough for use in different environments. PE is used for labelling products such as shower gels, cosmetics and cleaning solutions. It is also well suited to these applications due to it’s:

  • Resistance to Moisture
  • Flexibility
  • Durability

Polypropylene is stronger and more rigid than Polyethylene and has a wider range of performance choices on packaging. Polypropylene material is used widely in the beverage labelling industry and in high end cosmetic labelling where the material can provide a “no-label” look that can vastly increase the shelf impact of the product due to the materials incredible clarity. Other advantages of Polypropylene include:

  • Good Dimensional Stability
  • High Temperature Resistance
  • High Clarity
  • Good Conformability
  • Good Resistance to Abrasions

Polyester material has exceptional clarity, scratch and chemical resistance. Polyester is ideal for labelling niche products such as security products or automotive parts and can also provide the “no-label” look. Providing longevity in harsh environments Polyester material can perform under the most extreme circumstances. Some advantages of PET material are:

  • High Resistance to Abrasions and Chemicals
  • Suits a wide range of products
  • High Dimensional Stability
  • Resistance to High Temperatures

Consider the look of your label

When transitioning corporate images onto labels it is important that these images convert well to a printed label. Sometimes an image will look good on screen but when it is applied to print on a physical object, it doesn’t have the same impact. Labels have different qualities and unique properties. That is just for one type of label material as there is an abundance to choose from. Considering how important visual media is to brand awareness companies must remember to take the label into consideration.

Choose memorable colours for your brand and unique images for your labels. Generic photographs and images are quickly ignored by potential customers. Interesting pictures can really capture the imagination of consumers. An “interesting” picture or image can all depend on what the product or brand is trying to promote. It could be an abstract icon or graphic, a picture with different filters so it appears more interesting or it could be the company logo. Picking imagery that stands out from the crowd will help maximise your brand awareness and increase on-shelf appeal to customers.

How Quality product labels can Advertise your Brands

You may not realise it but you are subjected to hundreds maybe even thousands on a daily basis. When you’re browsing the internet, driving along motorways and see billboards, watching TV or listening to the radio there are always adverts that are trying to grab your attention. This makes it very hard for one certain brand or one individual product to really stand out from the crowd and grab a potential consumer’s attention.

A well designed product label can beat any TV advert or billboard advertisement. This is because product labels are tangible. Customers can pick up an item and inspect it. They can also touch and feel labels. This added tangible factor gives product labels a unique means of reaching customers that helps boost brand awareness. Self adhesive labels offer something entirely different to all other forms of advertisement and are a unique and appealing finish touch for any product.

Labels for Sportstrad Ltd

Both products from Sportstrad are new to the market and add another product to Goalkeeper Formula which already includes Glove Glu. One of these spray’s is designed and manufactured for keeping the inside of goalkeeper gloves fresh with an antibacterial spray whilst the other product is to enhance the latex surface of goalkeeping gloves and increase the longevity of its performance. For more details contact Etiquette on 0845 222 0354 or you can email the Sales Team at:

Thermal Printing

Thermal papers are widely used across many industries in applications from food labelling to barcodes and receipts. The paper is coated with heat sensitive chemicals and requires a thermal printer to create an image or text by applying heat directly to the label material. In the case of direct thermal printing no printer ribbon is required. This offers great reliability for use with short-life applications and products. Thermal printing material comes in two different forms which are coated and uncoated. Uncoated thermal material is ideal for sell by dates on fresh produce, whilst coated thermal printing material has a layer of protection that adds to performance value by giving a longer lasting life. This type of material would be used on fresh meat products or cheese. Just like normal coated papers the layer of coating is applied to the surface and improves performance capabilities such as adhesion and water resistance but can also add to the aesthetic look.

Adhesives for different labelling requirements

The type of label that you require will dictate the type adhesive that you will need for your products. You may want your labels to stick permanently to the product or to be easily removed. You may also want some time to readjust the label before the adhesive sets. What you will need to consider is the roughness of the products contact area where you intend to place the label. If the surface of the product is rough then the adhesive will only come into contact with the raised area of the surface which results in a smaller contact patch. This poses quite the problem for removable adhesives, and test applications will have to be done before commercial labelling can progress. Consider the shape also as this can place limitations on the adhesive that may be used. Box corners can pose quite the problem with edge lift, so a suitable face stock coupled with a strong adhesive will avoid any edge lift that will make the label and product on the whole look untidy.
