Label Adhesives

Being the UK’s independent experts in labels and labelling we know that every label is different as we specialise in the printing of self-adhesive labels. When creating self-adhesive labels the performance of the adhesive is critical to the label. The type of label that you require dictates the adhesive of which there are three main types permanent, semi-permanent or removable. To choose the correct adhesive for your labels you have to ask yourself. Do you want your labels to stick quickly and permanently to the substrates surface as Permanent adhesives have a high ultimate adhesion which makes the labels very difficult to remove intact. Do you need them to be easily removed? Removable adhesives are designed to form a temporary bond, and ideally can be removed after months or years without leaving residue. Perhaps you want time to readjust the labels before they stick permanently? Semi-permanent come somewhere in between. The adhesive behaves like a removable adhesive, initially allowing you time to place and replace your labels at will. After a few days, the adhesive changes composition and permanently affixes itself to the surface. For more information you can contact our sales team direct on 0845 222 0354 or email us at

A history of labels

Printed labels have been in use for over 130 years and were initially introduced to America by European artists, this profession became known as lithography, the first commercial art. The purpose of the label has always remained the same which is to attract the attention of any potential customers. Labels were used on cedar crates full of fruit, cans of vegetables, and boxes of cigars. Orchard owners used the new concept of lithography to draw attention to their produce as the fruit market grew larger with each passing season. However it wasn’t until the early 1930’s self – adhesive labels were manufactured.  The labels were made out of plain paper and a coat of adhesive, until then gum had been used to stick labels to the crates and other product containers. The term pressure sensitive became the industry name for this type of technique and laid the foundations for the labels that are an integral part of our lifestyle today.

Etiquette Q&A with Peter Kaye

Peter Kaye is Etiquette’s Technical Representative primarily responsible for the sales of Self –Adhesive Labelling Systems.

Peter initially served time as a Technical Apprentice and climbed the corporate ladder to the position of Project/Development Engineer at a liquid flow measurement company where he developed such items as the LPG Forecourt Dispenser.

This represented a new challenge in life and was something completely different to what I had been accustomed to over the past 18 years. Within this industry I had the opportunity to transfer from a production background as a Project Engineer who was responsible for the build and testing of labelling systems, to the sales-oriented position. This offered the opportunity of sharing my application knowledge, allowing me to assess a customer’s labelling requirements and deliver a suitable and efficient solution regardless of the industry or application.

Even before I began my career at Etiquette I had a “good feel” about the company which is important to me. The work force is committed to ensuring the best results for the customer as well as the company. There is considerable expertise in every area of the industry which is passed onto the customer. It is also essential that you believe in the product.

Etiquette can provide a complete solution to any labelling requirement whether it is standard or a bespoke label application system or premium quality primary product labels. Etiquette offers a complete range of labelling solutions, off line printers and their consumables. By adopting this strategy it means you do not enter the blame culture which is sometimes associated when packages are supplied from different suppliers.

The most pleasing aspect is being able to integrate into the company and share my wealth of knowledge with my colleagues and assist wherever possible, utilising my 28 years in the Packaging Industry. Another pleasing aspect of the job is when you have sold a system, it has been delivered and the customer states “Peter everything you said about the system and the company are spot on.” Then I believe I have done my job.

My future aspiration is to maintain the steady growth of the machinery side of the business which assists the label production side of the business and allows Etiquette to enjoy the status of a complete solutions provider. Our slogan  “Doing a great Deal in labelling” is not just a gimmick, we really do a great deal in labelling with the products and services that we offer to our customers.
