In 2007 Etiquette Helped Marmite “Squeeze” into Flexible Packaging

As the UK Experts in Labels and Labelling we were chosen to help Marmite change their packaging going through the biggest change in its 104-year history. In 2007 we were approached by Unilever to help re-package Marmite into more eco-friendly squeezable plastic packaging.

The Squeezable packaging design is based on the squat shape of Marmite’s traditional glass jar, which is itself inspired by the French cooking pot the brand is named after. There were certain obstacles to overcome to make the label more durable, as it would have to be more flexible and rugged to withstand not only the flexibility of the new packaging, but also the pressure applied to it when in use.

Our expert production team, whose knowledge is unrivalled in the industry, came up with the solution to use a Polyethylene material which is flexible and durable enough to withstand the firmest of squeezes. Polyethylene is also a very environmentally friendly material as well as being diverse, as it can be used for labelling products in a number of different industries such as household and personal care items.

The label shape itself was specially designed to adhere to the new type of packaging and was finished with one of Etiquette’s signature varnishes that would protect against abrasions during transport of the product in addition to any spillages that may occur, protecting the label whilst maintaining a high quality look and feel that you only get with labels from Etiquette.
