Barcode labels evolution 

Barcode labels have been critical elements for several years in different business sectors, mainly retail and logistics. This is a technique to work with information in a very fast and easy way. With these elements, every product can have a unique identification, which can be linked to a price, weight and other characteristics. This allows working with the product in warehouses and outlets, making it possible for the company to know exactly where are the products from the moment they are part of the inventory until they are finally sold.

The difference between barcode labels and other kind of identification methods is that labels produced with the first method can be read by barcode scanners, which are machines specifically designed to read such codes just by passing the scanner over it. The fact that these codes can be read by machines make it possible to integrate the technology to several business processes, like warehousing, sales and delivery.

The first barcode labels where designed with a very basic approach, thus the codes read where not always exactly interpreted by the machines, thus causing some mistakes. However, the technology evolved rapidly and these mistakes only happen today once in a million times. Several codification methods have been designed during the past decades. Some of them are used today in several industries. For example, the United States Postal Service still use barcode labels coded with the same style of forty years ago.

Nowadays is practically impossible to shop at the supermarket without the help of barcode labels. They function as the backbone of the whole industry, integrating providers, warehouse companies and customers in the massive consumption economy of the world. Without their help, buying operation speed will be reduced to the point that it would be nearly impossible to buy anything due to the large queues in front of the outlets.
